In 2012, I brought 11 other cellists together to form Celli — later Celli@Berkeley — an ensemble where members could explore their own musical curiosities and create new repertoire for cello choir. As the founder and director, I oversaw all administrative and creative decisions for the fledgling group, including positioning, branding, concert programming, and logistics. I laid the groundwork for multiple commissions, their debut CD, and countless concerts throughout the SF Bay Area.
The goal was to create a space for cellists and for the community that felt essential, like it had always been there and should always be there. Celli@Berkeley has since grown into a rite of passage for the Bay Area cello community, expanding to include 18 cellists, as well as CelliPop, focused on pop covers and non-classical music.
Where are they now? Celli (Celli@Berkeley and CelliPop) still thrives to this day. In addition to commissioning new works and releasing their debut album, they perform regularly in the Bay Area. Check out what they’re up to at https://celli.berkeley.edu.
